Woodland Valley Campground - DEC

No firewood for sale. No cell service anywhere close so you may be stuck driving around for awhile looking for some. The campsites are super close together and very very small spaces. No privacy or much quiet time. There are definitely a lot of spots that are better than others so I would suggest looking at the map and see where everything is. Front desk is pretty curt but I have heard they are consistently racist so that didn’t surprise me. No charcoal grill. Numerous bathrooms don’t work. Bottom line : it’s not terrible but it definitely feels like city camping and being in the Catskills with so many other sights I don’t ever see myself coming back. I’d recommend looking at YouTube videos there are a bunch of vlogs and filmed walking tours so you can easily see exactly the layout

Spent two nights here in late August of 2021. The campsites all have fire pits with grills and picnic tables. There's a full time campsite host, showers, bathrooms, and a trash room. 

Pros:

- some of the sites are right by a stream, and all of them have plenty of shade

- campsite was clean and well maintained

- campsite hosts were friendly and helpful

- tons of nice hiking trails nearby

- restrooms were clean 

Cons:

- some of the sites are pretty close together. Our"neighbors" both nights were pretty quiet, but if they weren't, it could have been noisy.

- while the bathrooms were clean, the showers definitely weren't. Bring you shower sandals!

- It can get a little busy on the weekends, so worth reserving in advance. 

We were camping in a VW Westfalia, so we had no trouble getting in and out. Something bigger might have a problem with some of these sites. They're definitely intended to be tent sites.

Clean facilities and friendly staff. Also our site was right next to bathroom and the water which was a plus for us. Hike was a bit intense since it was going up the hill. The only thing to consider is that about half an hour to the campground we lost phone signals.

Wonderful campsite 11 right next to the stream. unfortunately no hot water for my 3 days there.. mens bathroom sink near entrance was not working.. closet spigot working was near campsite 27. No firewood sold at campground at this time. NO cell phone service.. most campsite are very close together so not much privacy. Dead end road so virtually no road traffic at all. Most campsites are rocks and dirt. No fire ban 8/2022 at this time. Its about a 30 min ride to Phoenicia. Bathrooms clean. Very close to hiking trails- Slide mountain trail and giant ledge right next door

This campground is 5 miles out of the town of Phoenicia.  There are showers available.  The sites are large, but not particularly laid out for privacy.  Site surfaces are rocky and dirt, although some sites do have a little grass.  

Like many of the NY State Campgrounds, the cleanliness and overall maintenance of the campground is average at best.  We don't mind rustic, so it works for us.  The location of this one to the hiking we were going to do in the Catskills made it ideal for this trip.

Make sure you consult your maps when hiking in this area. We mistakenly took the long loop. Enjoyed this area. Nice mountain rage with the sound of water in the background.

The campground has everything that you need: public toilets, showers, public phone, picnic tables, grills, firewood (for sale), dump station. Close to Woodstock, NY, many trails and other attractions. You need to plan for it, there's a lot to explore; some trails are challenging. 

Highlights: the mountain creek is like nature singing a lullaby - sleeping next to it was very relaxing; weather was great and we could see the stars through the canopy - very very enjoyable!

No mobile signal, but that's the point, isn't it? You get to disconnect from it all for a while. Will definitely come back again, and again...

This is a great campsite. Clean ams not too dense. There was no fire wood available at the campsite so buy before you come (available in Phoenicia and Woodstock, both close).

This campground had easy access to excellent hiking trails. Woodstock, NY was about 30 min away and we enjoyed exploring the area on our non-hiking day. Very dog friendly.

Our site was semi-private with some shade next to the creek. It was perfect falling asleep listening to the sound of the stream. At check-in we did receive the bear talk so plan accordly. As a seasoned camper, this didn’t bother us -- just be prepared for proper food storage. The sites were flat and well laid out. Unfortunately, the women’s bathroom was broken during our stay...No cell service, and it's about a 30 minute drive to town.

Pro tip: Camp here for easy access to Slide Mountain and request a creek site.

Stayed here for a long weekend in October 2016. Campground was clean, on-site host was available for firewood purchases, facilities were clean. Campground was full, but did not feel crowded. Hiking trails accessible by foot from the campground.

this campground was very well kept. we ended up in a great spot right next to the creek and close to the bathrooms (which were very nice and flushable). very close the the town of Phoenicia. we ended up taking the 3.5 strenuous hike to Giant Ledge from the campground which was very tiresome but well worth it. it poured Saturday night and there was no flooding by our tent just in other parts of the campground. we got a warning we’ll before to keep our food locked up because of four bear in the area (didn’t see any). would definitely come back to this campsite.

Woodland valley was a smaller, remote campground. It seemed to be used mostly by hikers who weren’t staying long. Most sites were on the smaller side and about half were fairly private. facilities were clean and in good working order. Great access to the river and hiking trails.

Gets booked up in the summer..so plan in advance..beware of bears!

we got rained out. but it was still an awesome campground. private and just secluded enough. everyone was friendly. water to play in right behind tent. I do prefer fire pits over the brick stove. this had the stove. more advanced hiking in walking distance. no cell service. my gps on phone was able to track though.

We came on a less busy weekend--so it wasn't packed! Seems like it might be a bit squished if all sites are full, but we loved our experience! Down a longer road off of the main drag, so it is isolated. Beautiful!! Loved listening to the river all day and night. Went and splashed around in the river, right down a trail from our sight. Recommend!

Spent a night here after a festival. Hiked the slide mountain loop the next morning. We asked in the am if there was anything available for the evening after our hike - there was not but they said we could have first dibs once we got back. Luckily there was a site open later and we stayed another night. Cell service is limited, but that wasn't a problem for us.

Large campsite, clean facilities, fire pit, friendly and knowledgeable staff. This is an excellent site if you're looking to explore the Slide Mountain Wilderness and a great place to prep if you're planning to go backpacking as well. No/ very limited cell service but that's not important. Did not encounter black bears but they do frequent the area.

This is a great place to escape for a night or a weekend. I made sure to have my fishing permit with me along with my fly rod. The mountains are beautiful. I made sure to bring extra bug spray because the ticks and mosquitoes can be quite a pain in the butt. The hiking isn't amazing! They have restrooms, which is a plus if you have never been camping without them. They also have picnic tables! I was surprised at how clean this campground was!!! Will certainly be back.

Near the Big Indian Wilderness and Sundown Wild Forest in the Catskills, so there’s a lot of hiking and nature to explore. The campground is very basic but memorable for its simple beauty and all the nearby hikes. The camp sites along the stream are best, and if you’re in a tent a few of them are even farther from the road (but only about 100 feet).

The long, narrow, and winding road from Route 28 to Woodland Valley campground should not keep you from camping there! The campground is located on a nice stream (Woodland creek) and has some really nice sites and some really basic sites. The rangers were very friendly and helpful, and the facilities were in good shape (free hot showers!).

Most important is the fact that you can quickly get to many great hikes in the Catskills including Hunter, Slide, Plateau Rock, and many others.

We forgot our airpump, for out air mattress (glamping at its finest) The very kind caretakers allowed us to come into their basement and use their airpump! (we also went into town and bought a pump from The Storehouse!

Our site was perfect, it poured rain, but the grade worked will, no puddling! The access to Woodland Valley Stream provided the greatest relief from the heat, and the night time ranger was also sweet as pie!

There is some very nice hiking in this area, the highest mountain in the Catskills is right on site. Take a day and climb it! Super cute town nearby with farmers market. Camp site is close enough to rt 87 to be convenient but less crowded than some other Catskills sites I’ve been to (at least it was in August). Very wooded sites, nice and relatively private. Clean, well kept, basic state park accommodations. Nice babbling brook near our camp site. Obey bear rules!!

I took my family to this campground for a weekend away. The campground itself is a nice quiet little place with a stream running through it. There are a lot of great hiking trails that can be accessed from this campground. And Slide Mountain is a perfect hiking destination. The grounds were well kept and for the most part clean. Typical of a NYS DEC Campground. The bathrooms were older and a bit run down. But they were clean and usable. The only down side was a strong thunderstorm that came through on the day we arrived and we had torrents of water running through our site and the 'quaint' stream became a large rushing river. It was still a nice place and I'd go back again.

Spend a weekend here hiking - campgrounds were creekside and quiet. Unfortunately it rained the entire weekend, but the campsite itself was well maintained and there are good trails directly out of the campground.

If you like to camp by water, this is the perfect place for you. It has amazing on the water sites you can camp at, plus a stunning view of the Catskills. The hikes are just easy enough for anyone in the family.

Can't say enough good things about the Catskill mountains!
